• HAVE YOU BECOME THE PERSON YOU WANTED TO BE? ARE YOU RESOLVING TO DO SO IN THE NEW YEAR?

This could be one of the questions for the new year.  Many years ago a colleague and friend, Dr. Natasha Josefowitz, wrote a wonderful book of poetry titled:  I HAVE ARRIVED. IS THIS WHERE I WAS GOING?   It’s a challenge to review, reflect, and focus on intention.  Am I driving the bus? Or am I simply a passenger?  And what happens if I decide to walk to the front, if not already there, and take hold of the wheel?

AND if I want to, but don’t yet know how? Actually simply acknowledging there is something we want to do or be BUT don’t understand how to make happen is the first step!

And for many reasons, as the new year draws closer, it’s for many, an automatic time to reflect and question, and make resolutions for intentions about doing, being, becoming.  It’s a good thing to look forward, make plans and identify goals for what’s next. But here’s one caution: don’t make the list something you beat yourself up about.  Just make the list something you pay attention to.  As a guide. As a reminder of the things you are still planning or hoping to do in order to become the person you want/wanted to be.

Issue: What you haven’t done or become can be what you are working on — or toward.  No excuses, just plans/goals that still need your action, your attention.  And many have been quoted as saying we become that which we pay attention to………And that makes that QUOTE itself worthy of attention!

So do I believe in New Year’s Resolutions? Well, since I MAKE them, I guess I have to own up to believing they are worthwhile.  But with qualifications.  I do believe that the more we WRITE DOWN our goals and plans and aspirations, the more likely we are to accomplish what we are striving for.  Just don’t pour concrete around the ideas.  As each of us move forward to accomplish a goal, we learn. We see new things/ideas and we come to forks in the road that suggest we need an adjustment in the direction we were headed….so use what you write as a map that can be altered when necessary vs a check list for failures.  And one more thing:  write with a pen and paper. Truly. It makes a difference.  Besides it’s a mini vacation from your computer.

AND permitting myself one suggestion:  RESOLVE TO SPEND FAR, FAR LESS TIME ON YOUR MULTIPLE TECH DEVICES.  Look UP. LISTEN. PAY ATTENTION TO THE PEOPLE YOU LIVE WITH AND WORK WITH…..AND TO YOURSELF.

    And HAPPY NEW YEAR!
